Planning a trip to Nepal is an exciting adventure, and securing the correct visa is an essential first step. Most international travelers can obtain their tourist visas easily upon arrival, though there are a few important requirements to keep in mind.
Tourist Visa on Arrival
The majority of foreign nationals can get a tourist visa on arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, as well as at designated land border crossings (such as Raxaul/Birgunj, Sunauli, and Kakarbhitta).
- Required Documents:
- A valid passport with at least 6 months validity remaining from your arrival date.
- At least one blank visa page.
- Passport-size photographs (though photo booths are available at the airport, carrying a couple of physical copies is recommended).
- Visa fee payment (cash is preferred; major foreign currencies like US Dollars, Euros, and Pound Sterling are widely accepted).
Visa Fee Structure (Tourist Visa)
Visa fees are typically structured based on the duration of your stay:
- 15 Days: $30 USD
- 30 Days: $50 USD
- 90 Days: $125 USD
Note: Nationals from certain countries (such as Afghanistan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Palestine, Somalia, Swaziland, Syria, and Zimbabwe) may not be eligible for a visa on arrival and must obtain one from a Nepalese Embassy or Consulate in their home country prior to departure.
Visa Extensions & Trekking Permits
- Extensions: If you wish to stay longer, tourist visas can easily be extended at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or Pokhara for up to 150 days per calendar year.
- Special Permits: Certain restricted trekking regions (like Upper Mustang, Manaslu, or Dolpo) require specialized restricted area permits in addition to your standard visa and TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card.
